Diapers are expensive – they can cost $100 or more a month – and they can’t be bought with food stamps, WIC, or any other government assisted program. As a result, parents try to make do without or by stretching their diaper supply, forcing babies to sit in soiled diapers for longer than they should or by reusing dirty diapers. Diapers are a small necessity, but lack of clean diapers can make a huge impact:
• Most childcare providers require an adequate supply of DISPOSABLE diapers to enroll a child. If a parent cannot supply these diapers they cannot find childcare, if a parent cannot find childcare they cannot work, if a parent cannot work they cannot buy diapers, and the horrible cycle continues.
• Not having diapers means a longer time between changes, which can lead to severe diaper rash and bacterial infections.
• Not having a clean diaper means that a child cries more often which increases stress for parents and can lead to incidents of child abuse.
• Not having diapers can adversely affect a mother’s feeling of self-worth which negatively impacts the mother-child bond.
The diaper need is tremendous – a healthy child will wear an average of 50 diapers a week. That’s approximately 2,600 diapers a year for each child. And with 1 out of every 4 Illinois children under the age of 5 living in poverty, the need for diaper assistance is huge. We need your help to #keepeverybabydry!
